"Art is not what you see, it's what you make others see"
-Edgar Degas
Hi, I'm Sonja!
Welcome to my world of colour and texture.
I am a mixed media abstract artist and interior designer from West London and have lived and worked in this vibrant, cultural area all my life.
I have been painting and sculpting for as long as I can remember.
My background is a foundation in Fine art, a Bachelor degree in Interior Design, and over 25 years experience in the field of Interiors. Lockdown gave me time to be creative, and I have returned to my lifelong passion of art, spending more time creating unique contemporary pieces.
Art is a finishing touch that really can transform a space and add character to your interior; to reflect your personality/brand, and compliment your decor scheme. Sometimes it can even be the starting point for the colour scheme.
My mission is to create expressive, atmospheric paintings which invite you in and lift the soul.
Nostalgic yet contemporary...
I aim to explore connections, emotions and memories, which I hope you'll relate to and enjoy.
Art is powerful and engaging when it is familiar, but equally when it's abstract and thought-provoking.
INSPIRATION
Inspired by the transience of nature and its beauty, forces and fragilities, I aim to capture a visual diary of nostalgic moments, emotions, conversations and snippets of memories from my daily walks, travels and my love of flowers; to create art with energy and soul. From lush green London parks and forests to delicate spring blooms, featuring bursts of exotic florals and foliage, I embrace both the calmness, chaos and colour of our changing seasons.
Using different scales and perspectives and zooming in and out, my landscapes and florals lie somewhere between abstraction and realism. Sometimes whimsical, they are more about the energy of the colours, shapes, and textures that I feel are evoked from their physical properties and feelings from those experience. I draw parallels of human interaction and the natural world, personifying flora to appeal to human emotion, reflection and contemplation
PAINTING / MIXED MEDIA
Contrasting muted delicate marks against bold structural strokes and textural areas, a vibrant energy can be found in the journey across mywork. I create my expressive, atmospheric paintings with many different tools and applications which often involve combining touches of metallic accents, layering of different textures and experimenting with different mediums. These touches of gilt can be found as threads, highlights or backgrounds, which link my collections love how it affects our emotions and enriches our wellbeing.
Using a wide spectrum of palettes ranging from calm neutrals to mouth-watering pastels and vibrant neons. I combine these with layers of texture, gilt metallic touches, mixed media and some up- cycled materials including egg/pistachio shells.
The freedom and purity of abstraction and using many techniques is what motivates me as well as the excitement of what each unique piece will result in.
Taking a scene and breaking away from the constraints of objective reality in its entirety to creating art that invites interpretation or a story from the viewer.
CLAY SCULPT
My collections are varied, and my 'one-off' clay sculpt pieces are born out of my love of sculpture, decorative accessories, and 3-dimensional design. These can be personalised as unique boxed art gifts.
LIMITED EDITIONS
I have also just completed a limited 'Re-Imagined' range of greeting cards based on my 'Florals' range and in the archives 'Jubilee Queen'
A CHANGING WORLD
Having collectively felt the varying effects of a global pandemic, climate change and the degradation of the environment, I have sought to reflect and embrace the stages of fragility, turmoil, resilience and hope in our human perceptions, thoughts and attitudes.
The pandemic inspired my ‘Conceptual' collection and refocused my mind and reignited my onward artistic journey in the wake of a new decade of being more mindful of our actions and of looking after our planet and ourselves both physically and spiritually.
CONCEPTUAL
My abstract 'Conceptual' pieces are a response to this environmental awareness. I love recycling and reusing wherever possible to minimise waste, and these pieces of work have been created with some up-cycled materials, primarily shells, with the intention of being both literal and symbolic.
